180's LLC Marine Corps Combat Desert Jacket
Clothing
Saturday, 23 August 2008 05:34

I picked up one of these jackets to try out something a little lesser known. The full name is Marine Corps Combat Desert Jacket, however so I don't have to type all that business out every time we'll just call it the CDJ. The main concept of this jacket is to be a full on desert jacket. Everyone knows the desert gets hot, but it can also get cold at night. Although rain isn't so common, wind and sand storms frequently come into play. A lot of effort went into finding fancy fabrics to create this soft shell that can both keep you cool or warm as needed. Some fabric use highlights include:

TACTICAL TAILOR 85 Series Optical Hardcase:
Pouches
Friday, 22 August 2008 02:49

INNER DIM: 6" tall X 3 1/4" wide X 2 1/2" deep
OUTTER DIM: 6 1/2" tall x 3 3/4" wide x 3 1/4" deep

The 75 Hardcase came out a bit ago with the intent to hold small and medium sized electronics, but a comment started coming up again and again: "I wish I could put my glasses in there." The people spoke and Tactical Tailor listened creating the 85 series hardcase. Pretty much any tactical glasses will fit in there with room to spare to add accessories like lenses and nose-pieces. Even some of the smaller goggles will fit as well. As with all TT hardcases the outside is some fancy pants hard plastic material that can withstand a meat eating man dropping on it resulting in very little flex. On the inside they added a felt-like material so your goodies won't get scratched up. The top/lid connects with a snap hinge and can be removed while the main closure is a simple metal snap. Although not water proof, the case still offers good water and dust resistance. Malice clips are integrated to the back to allow installation on belts or PALS webbing gear. I got a little carried away with the picture count, but thought I might as well show what I have. The last 3 pictures show size comparison of the 85 next to the 75. Some other random items I found made a good fit were my light meter and the Pacific Concepts Advanced Tactical Camera. Not much else to say, if you need a mountable hardcase for your cool guy specs, this is the stuff right here. The 85 case is currently available in Foliage, Tan, and Black colors.

OPS-CORE ACH - ARC Helmet Rail System
Protective
Tuesday, 15 July 2008 05:13

I first saw these back in shotshow 2007 and am recently pretty jazzed to get my hands on a set. If you ever wanted to mount something on your helmet, usually one has to do some drilling, creative gluing, or add on some velcro. With the ARC system the user has a solid platform that allows attachments to be easily put on and off, yet also can be locked down for security. In a pack you get 2 main rails, 4 longer screws with backs, 2 Picatinny rail inserts, and 2 create-a-mount inserts. The main rails are made of some heavy duty polymers so are tough, yet lightweight.

5.11-TACTICAL Sabre Jacket
Clothing
Saturday, 05 July 2008 05:33

The Sabre Jacket is 5.11's take on a full featured highly weather resistant jacket. The creation is likely a response to the growing demand of high-end jackets. After a brief look-see, the general layout appears very response jacket like, but with numerous additions. Starting with the pockets, there are 2 classic side hand pockets with zipper openings. Flaps are sewn on top of the opening to help with item retention when zippers are open and weather protection. Both shoulders have zippered pockets with highly water resistant zippers. 3"x2" loop velcro areas are also on these pockets so you can mount your favorite cool guy patch. Both sides of the upper chest also have fancy weather resistant zippered pockets. The more central placement is easiest to use for most users, but will be covered by those who wear armor. On the inside of the jacket is a zippered pocket on the left and a velcro sealed pocket on the right. I guess they mix it up to give the user options on speed vs. security.

Pouches
Sunday, 15 June 2008 06:37

<FastMag PDF>
The original FASTmag created a unique flapless 30 round NATO magazine holding option, but as in all things, there was room for improvement. The latest Gen2 version clearly listened to user feedback and is a dramatic improvement.

TRU-SPEC 24/7 Tactical Pants
Clothing
Sunday, 15 June 2008 05:32

Need an affordable tactical pant? Look no further, these 24/7 pants are a great bang for the buck. The main design is based on a classic cargo pant, but includes many modern features. Starting off with the core material, it is heavier than rip-stop consisting of 8.5oz 100% cotton canvas that is pre-washed to reduce shrinking and fading. The belt loops are thick for durability and the main top closure uses a basic metal snap. The fly uses a durable YKK metal zipper and a backup button is available if for some reason you worry about your fly zipping down on its own.

Top: 9” x 4” x 1” with elastic organizer, division, mesh pocket

I wish I had a chance to do this review earlier, but better late than never. I got the Proteus a while back and found it small for my particular needs, so I was happy to see the Sabercat come out, which is a lot like a biggun' Proteus.

5.11-TACTICAL XPRT 8" Patrol Boot
Footwear
Sunday, 11 May 2008 04:48

5.11 offers up another piece to their footware line with the big selling point on this guy is the high strength composite kick toe. The shape and material used for the kick toe are a great compromise of protection and flexibility for comfort. Traditionally boots like these would have steel toes resulting in pretty low comfort levels. The core of the XPRT design is that of a deluxe well constructed and padded boot. The "Shock Mitigation System™" includes a fairly plush insole insert. Due to the materials and padding thickness it may be a bit hot in hot climates, but generally makes for a good urban boot.
